Born in 1969, he started his shipping carreer in 1990 as a competetive chartering broker at a traditional Hamburg based shipowner. Since 1994 he is a Member of the Institute of Chartered Shipbrokers, London.

In 1995, Thies started as a sale and purchase broker at a well-known Hamburg based s&p broker company. Core business was the brokerage of newbuildings, he started the main business in China and Eastern Europe. In 1998 he became "Procura" for the company. End of 2004, Thies decided to start his own business and in January, 2005, TvA Shipping was founded.
